Back-injection technology provides advantages in the field of short cycle times. However, the component size is limited upwards, as costs for tools and investments of machines can no longer be presented economically when a certain component size is reached. Back-injection technology has established itself mainly for small components in the field of interior trims.
In experiments with highly polished injection moulding tools in clean working conditions Class A - surface finish quality could be achieved. The main condition for such results is, as in thermoforming, a dust-free insulation against contamination of the surrounding working area.
For smaller interior components with lower requirements of heat distortion temperature ABS as back-injection material has proved itself. For interior components with higher reqirements in respect of heat distortion temperature, ABS/PC as back-injection material has proved successful.
